Hazlehead (3) Bon Accord II (2)
This was the first ever District League match for a very young Bon Accord II side who currently boast an average age of 17. The boys all attend Mearns Academy in Laurencekirk where they are coached by Stephen Milne.
The game got off to a flying start for Hazlehead who took the first set 25-13. The experience of Dave Youngson then carried the home side to victory in the second set by 25-19. Bon Accord however were starting to look more confident on court and this started to pay off when they took a very tight third set by 25-23. The younger squad were by now looking much stronger and their superior fitness was starting to give them an advantage.
In the fourth set some excellent setting from both Robbie McLaren and Clark Hadden provided Bon Accord with the ammunition to spike their way to victory in another closely fought set, eventually winning by 25-22. Hazlehead's Dave Youngson starting to find it increasingly difficult to find a way passed an effective blocking performance by the youngsters. Sergey Korostin, Jay Donald and Kerr Jack all taking it in turn to block the experienced player!
The fifth and deciding set turned out to be a nervy one from both sides with the home side scrambling to keep the ball off the floor but doing it effectively to frustrate Bon Accord. Despite a strong run of serves from Robbie McLaren, Hazlehead ran out 15-10 winners to take the match 3-2.
Thanks must go to Hazlehead ladies who provided a full compliment of officials and to both teams for an entertaining match. Roll on the return game!
